Would Your Brag Document Bullet Get You Promoted?
Brag Bullet Grader
Paste up to three bullets from your brag document, one per line. Each is checked for scope, a verifiable number, an outcome and who saw it. It runs in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
Why scope matters: Why most brag documents don't get anyone promoted.
How bullets are graded
Each bullet earns up to five points across four checks. The checks are rules, not judgment, so read the result as a prompt to look again, not a verdict on the work.
| Check | Points | What earns them |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | 0 to 2 | 1 for cross-team or named partner teams, 2 for org-wide or company-wide |
| Verifiable number | 1 | A percentage, count, amount or time saved |
| Outcome | 1 | States what changed, not just an activity. |
| Who saw it | 1 | Names someone who can vouch for it. |
| 4 to 5 points | Reads as next-level evidence | |
| 2 to 3 points | Reads as current-level evidence | |
| 0 to 1 points | Needs more detail |
The fifth part, the criterion it supports, can't be checked from the bullet alone. Tag each bullet to a line on your career ladder.
What this grader gets wrong
- It reads words, not work. A well-worded bullet about a small project can outscore a plain one about a big project.
- It guesses scope from keywords. "The platform" might be org-wide at your company, and the grader can't know that.
- It can't tell whether a number matters. A 2% change can be huge in one product and noise in another.
- It can't see your criteria. Whether a bullet is the right evidence depends on what your next level asks for.
Questions
What makes a good brag document bullet?
It says what you led, how far the result reached beyond your team, the number it moved, and who saw it. A bullet missing scope reads as evidence for the level you already hold.
How do you write promotion packet bullets?
Start with the decision or the work you owned, name the teams or org it affected, add the before and after number, and end with who recognized it. One bullet per accomplishment, tagged to the criterion it supports.
Why does scope matter more than the number of accomplishments?
Promotion criteria for the next level are mostly about reach. Four accomplishments inside your own team are four examples of your current level, not a case for the next one.
Does the grader use AI or store my bullets?
Neither. It runs rule-based checks in your browser. Your bullets never leave the page.
Where your bullets go
A strong bullet only helps if it's still there when the case is due. Career Growth Tracker keeps each accomplishment with its scope, the number it moved, who saw it and the criterion it supports, and shows which criteria still have a scope gap.

Five parts per entry. A bullet with all five reads as evidence for the next level.
[Outcome verb] [what changed], [number before → after]. Scope: [Team / Cross-team / Org]. Seen by: [named person or group]. Supports: "[criterion from the next level]". Example: Cut CI pipeline time from 22 to 9 minutes; two other backend teams adopted the setup. Scope: Org. Seen by: platform lead. Supports: "raises the technical bar".
